Book Review: Once Upon a Broken Heart #1

Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber

Quote: "It wasn't that long ago that I saw you in my church, willing to promise me almost anything to make the pain stop. Was that a lie? Or have you already forgotten the way heartbreak rips apart the soul piece by piece, how it turns you into a masochist, making you long for the thing that just eviscerated you until there's nothing left of you to be destroyed?"

Blurb: For as long as she can remember, Evangaline Fox has believed in happily ever after. Until she learns that the love of her life is about to marry another, and her dreams are shattered.

Desperate to stop the wedding, and heal wounded heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic, but wicked, Prince of Hearts. In exchange for his help, he asks for three kisses, to be given at the time and place of his choosing.

But after Evangeline's first promised kiss, she learns that bargaining with an immortal is a dangerous game - and that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she pledged. He has plans for Evangeline, plans that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy.

My Personal Views: This classic fairy tales inspired young adult fantasy book is one of its kind. If you share my love for slow-burn romantic fantasy books, "Once Upon a Broken Heart" is a must-read.

Immersed in a world of magic, curses, and vampires, this book is tailor-made for readers who appreciate morally grey protagonists. If you enjoy themes like enemies-to-lovers, plot twists, betrayals, and a gradual build of tension between the main characters, this story has it all.

Let's talk about the protagonists, Jacks and Eve, who are quickly becoming my new favorite book couple. Their banter and the tension between them add a delightful charm. With this first book of the trilogy, we can already see that Jacks is a complex character and to see how his relationship with Eve goes, would be quite exciting.

To say Eve is a naïve character would be understandable. Despite some questionable decisions, I can't bring myself to dislike her. I still think, she is adorable and perhaps she has just been brought up in a way which has helped her character to become what we had seen in the book. Hence, she has my understanding.

The plot and world building is quite good in the book. Hats off to the author for that, really. Although I personally felt the book, a bit lacking in the romance department, the compelling plot and the evolving dynamics between the main characters more than make up for it.

I'm eagerly anticipating delving into the second and third books of the trilogy to witness the full unfolding of Jacks and Eve's story.
